We were recently asked to create fireworks that felt as though they were hand animated or stop motion. That led to start of this animation challenge!
This version was made in After Effects using particles and shape layers. It didn't feel as much like stop motion as I'd have liked so I just pushed it the other way so it didn't get stuck in some weird middle ground.
Next, I tried an actual 3d solution to see if I could get something that felt a more dimensional, but still made of simple shapes. In Cinema it just boiled down to cloners and effectors...nothing fancy.
Shane came up with a really cool idea of using the shape of coiled pencil shavings for the initial burst of the firework and then little pieces of shaving to create the sparkles that follow. Instead of just trying to LOOK like stop motion, he went ahead and made ACTUAL stop motion.
